This is a change needed in order to comply to the upcoming threadchecking scheme
for APM. The simplest solution was to remove one of the calls to the APM api.
This weakens the test somewhat but allowes the actual test framework to act as
one of the threads accessing the APM, and since that is a much faster way of
fixing this than adding another thread to the test the choice was made to do it
this way instead.
